Getting Ready for Spring

I hope you’ve had another enjoyable week in your garden!  I’ve been very busy over the last few days getting ready beds and containers in preparation for some spring colour.  Although spring seems like a very long way away right now, it definitely pays to think ahead!  I’ve bought some bare-rooted wallflowers and I’ll give them a soak in a bucket of water for a couple of hours before planting them out.

Planting out plants like wallflowers at this time of year is a great idea as it gives them plenty of time to establish themselves so they’re ready to (hopefully!) burst into flower as soon as spring comes!

I’ve been giving my compost heap a little attention this week.  Instead of just throwing on barrows full of dead leaves, I’ve remembered to turn my compost heap over first.  In an ideal world I’ve have two compost heaps so that I could have an empty one ready to turn the compost into.  I’d recommend turning your compost over every three months if you can although I have to confess I usually just manage to get around to it twice a year in spring and autumn.

Just one more little reminder: overnight frost can be on the cards at this time of year, so don’t forget to make sure that you’ve protected any tender perennials with fleece and brought really tender plants indoors!  It’s all too easy to get caught out at this time of year.
